With the creative destruction brought about by digital, mobile and social media, there is an air of desperation in the media industry. That's what makes this course so much fun. Think of this class as your primer on all things digital. We will focus on studying emerging media effects on culture, economics, politics, and the presentation of news.
As the first course taught in the newly constructed Social Media Analysis and Creation (SMAC) Lab, we will also learn to use digital media as a method for conducting both quantitative and qualitative mass communication research. We will also challenge ourselves occasionally to collaborate and Make Cool Stuff.
The weekly readings are intense, but the course assignments offer flexibility in terms of meeting your own personal research and professional goals.
